We treat Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy can be treated and we are skilled surgeons.  Routine annual examinations are especially crucial if you have Diabetes.  We can see the signs of the disease in your eye even if you haven’t noticed any vision loss.  By the time you notice the change, it could be too late to correct.  The bottom line is if you have Diabetes you need to schedule a comprehensive eye exam every year.

We can prevent vision loss if we catch it early.

We perform a test called fluorescein angiography. Put simply, we inject dye into the body and take pictures as the dye passes through the retina.

How do we treat Diabetic retinopathy?

  • Once we have determined how far the disease has progressed we can use laser surgery to seal off the leaking blood vessels. It is painless and takes only minutes to perform.
  • We may, instead, wait to see if the cloudy vision dissipates on its own. If it doesn’t, we can perform a vitrectomy. This removes the blood that has been leaking into the eye.
  • Lasers may also be used to purposely eliminate the area of the retina that is not necessary for vision.
  • The newest treatment is called Lucentis, which is an injectable medication that was just recently approved by the FDA.
